Wed 11/20 - More Layer Masking

Let's play a bit more with layer masking so that we're comfortable.

One Technique, Two Images Due TODAY: 
-1 using an image from the web
-1 using your own image and experimenting with the technique

Layer Masking with Text


1.) Create a new document at 'Instagram' Size (1080x1080px, 72ppi)

2.) Bring in a high-res photo. (One of your own photos.)

3.) On another layer, type out any text. (Large, bold fonts works best. Try to maximize the area. Ensure text is ALIGNED for professionalism.)

4.) Once your text is set, Hide your text layer.

5.) Command+Click on your text layer's thumbnail to make the selection.

6.) With selection made, create a layer mask on your photo layer.

7.) Transform (Cmd+T) any layers to fill your document.

Mon 11/4 - Motion Design Week!

Hey all! Sorry I'm not here today!

To start your motion design project...
1.) Pick Infographic or Bumper
2a.) If INFOGRAPHIC, begin building text and vectors in an illustrator file you want to animate.
2b.) If BUMPER, break your logo apart into different pieces to animate on their own.

Mon 10/28 - Style Sheets

As we move to finalize our logos and brands, we need to plan out our style sheets:
  • 11x17"
  • Include Logo(s), colors, fonts, mockups, and any additional brand elements
  • Be styled appropriately for the brand's aesthetic
  • Include more than white/one color!! Gradients? Images?

3.) Make a pinterest board for Logos & Branding. Search and pin at least 10 different logos/brands/ideas that you like! Check out mine for a starting point...

Clipping Mask Silhouette

To make a Clipping Mask Silhouette:

1. Make a 10x10 inch document in Illustrator.
2. File>Place a side-profile photo of yourself... Scale it to fit.
3. Use the pen tool to trace out your silhouette
    -Include neck and shoulders all the way to the bottom
    -Stive for detail
4. Hide your photo

5. Search for two new, large resolution photos of scenery or texture
6. File place one in, arrange it behind your silhouette.
7. With both silhouette and photo selected, Object > Clipping Mask > Make (Cmd+7)
8. Insert your background, scale to fit.
9. Save as "lastname_clippingmask.jpeg"
10. Upload to Google Drive. (Clipping Mask folder inside the Pen Tool folder)

Urban Design: Skate Decks

Skate Deck Requirements

  • 2 Designs: One 'simple' & one 'complicated'
  • 7.5" wide, 31.75" tall
  • 300 PPI (pixels per inch)
  • Combination of Imagery & Typography
  • Well-Coordinated Color Scheme
  • Specific Theme in Imagery & Text
Consider theme: Music? An artist/song? A place - city or destination? Can the theme be a quote or a lifestyle?

At the end of the project, there will be a voting poll to vote on the Top 5 designs in each class. Winning designs will be printed!

For your own layout, use your skills of typography to create a poster illustrating a quote.

Pick any inspirational or philosophy quote you like, or lyrics you resonate with.
  • 6"x6"
  • Well-coordinated color scheme
  • Two, well-paired fonts
  • Use of alignment and centering

Wed 9/4 - Type Basics Day 1: Kerning

Let's talk Typography. For starters, Kerning and Tracking.

Kerning is space between individual letters in a line of type.
Tracking is space between all of the letters in a line of type.

After you learn to track and kern in Illustrator, try out the Kerning Game. Shoot to score over 70 on each word.

Fri 8/30 - 1L1#1F Finishing

1.) Make sure you have at least 3 grayscale and 3 color .PDFs uploaded to Google Drive.

2.) Upload your favorite version to the presentation to share for critique.

3.) Create a new document in your 1L1#1F folder and respond to these reflection questions:

  1. Does your poster have a focal point? What makes it that way?
  2. What principles of design did you emphasize - how are they seen in you poster?
  3. From the feedback and seeing other designs, what could you change about your design to improve its reception?
  4. Rate yourself 1-5 on your proficiency with Adobe Illustrator thus far. What tools make the most sense now? What tools are you still confused on?

Thu 8/29 - Colorrrrrr

In lieu of today's Rainbow Out...

Goal for Monday: Turn in 3+ different colored versions of your poster. 
1.) Contrasting colors. 
2.) Monochromatic or Analagous. 
3.) Your own scheme.

Take today to work on your first design - GD is Everywhere.

Keep in mind:
  • This is just a pretest - you get the A for turning something in.
  • You only have this period to turn it in. 
  • Your end goal is just to make a segment of the quote more interesting or engaging to read.
By the end of the period, save your work as a .jpeg and turn it into the folder on Google Drive.
